It was on 2 meters so not really DX but I was able to hit a repeater 77 miles away. Boone NC to Shelby NC. I was actually able to make contact on 5 watts but got an OK signal report. 10 watts gave me a 59. Here is my rig. Transmitting from the 5th floor of Cone Hall at Appalachian State University.

I’ve been thinking about getting my ham license, will have to look into the cost of a course.

If you just want your technician license I don’t think you need a class. I watched a 6.5 hour long YouTube class (not all at once, in half hour increments over a few weeks). I also had a practice test app on my phone that I would practice with when I had time, on the bus, during class, etc.

Other license classes though will need a class from what I understand. But Technician is all you need to get on the air. Great hobby.

In Canada we have the Amateur Radio Operator Certificate with Basic Qualification, and then you can add either (or both) of the Morse or Advanced qualifications.

The certificate and call sign are free when you get your Basic, but you still have to pay an examiner (or the Industry Canada office) for the test, as far as I can tell.

Ah. I don’t know about the Canadian system. I’ve read a few places you can take it in the US and just list a friend’s US adress. Lots of Europeans do this to avoid taking the harder tests in their country.

There is a local amateur radio club, http://www.marc.qc.ca/ . I’ve sent an email to see if they do courses or study sessions.

Just found this on the West Island ARC website ( http://www.wiarc.ca/faq/course.htm… ): there is an online course for $100 that might be useful. http://raqi.ca/formation2/www…
